Tip: Why are some pots called Dutch ovens?
A dutch oven is a heavy duty cast iron pot that comes with a tight fitting lid. In the 1600 hundreds they were called black pots or cauldrons. These pots were used to cook over open fires for cooking stews, to bake or fry something. Dutch artisans developed a method for casting using dry sand molds that were able to produce pots with finer sides and smooth finishes, called Dutch ovens. This is one of the most versatile pots in an American kitchen.
